The North Fork Alternative Plan — A Community-Based Proposal for Managing BLM Oil and Gas Development in the North Fork and Smith Fork Watersheds
This spring, the Bureau of Land Management will release a draft Resource Management Plan (RMP) that will include its proposed decision on where to allow oil and gas leasing and under what type of management. To prepare for the coming RMP, the Conservation Center has been working with a team of community members and Citizens for a Healthy Community to develop the North Fork Alternative Plan.
The North Fork Alternative Plan sets out to adapt existing BLM management tools to the North Fork, and to craft a framework for oil and gas leasing and development that is highly protective of the North Fork’s important features and resources. This December, we submitted a detailed version of the North Fork Alternative Plan to the BLM Uncompahgre Field Office. Click here to read our press release.
The complete document, and appendices, are available for download via Dropbox.

We need to show the BLM that there is wide-spread support in our community for the North Fork Alternative Plan. Therefore, we will be asking members from the community, local businesses and Town Councils to endorse this Plan.

On July 9, 2013 the Paonia Town Council voted to send a letter to US Senator Michael Bennet asking him to include additional lands in pending or future legislation to protect these key-water sources, nearby critical wildlife habitat lands and hunting access, local landmark, scenic areas and recreational opportunities. Maps are provided to depict how management prescriptions and development setbacks and stipulations protect specific resources. Maps do not necessarily indicate where all such resources are found, and may not correctly depict all places where such stipulations do or do not apply. As it works to revise its Resource Management Plan, the BLM is required to inventory public lands for resources and public uses, and to analyze how it will protect these resources wherever they exist.
